The Nanny is a fantastic read for fans of thrillers and suspense novels with a twist. Many years ago, when Jo/Jocelyn was a little girl living at Lake Hall with her wealthy parents, she had a nanny whom she loved very much. Her nanny, Hannah, was so much more lovable than Jo’s own mother, Virginia, that Jo would cry if Virginia held her and hold her arms out for Hannah. Then one day, Hannah and all of her belongings disappear. Jo is heartbroken. Many years later, Jo is back at Lake Hall with her own daughter Ruby and Hannah shows up on their doorstep. Coincidentally, a skull washes up in the lake around the same time. Why is Hannah back and does it have something to do with the skull? The Epilogue gives the reader a possible insight into whom the skull belongs to, but until all of the pieces are put together, it is quite puzzling exactly who the skull belongs to. The book alternates narration between Jo and Virginia as well as some chapters that give us some backstory into Hannah’s past. This book was creatively written and is the perfect mystery.
