Join us as Daisy sits down with author Carmen Maria Machado to discuss her debut novel in the 2nd Floor Art Department!

A bit about the book: Gretel, a lexicographer, is searching for her mother, and as soon as she finds her the past comes rushing back. Gretel grew up on a houseboat on the canals of Oxford, speaking an invented language with her mother. One fateful summer, before Gretel is abandoned to foster care as a teenager, Gretel and her mother take in a mysterious runaway, and they are all haunted by an ominous creature lurking in the canal, the Bonak. As past, present, fate, and free will collide and converge, Gretel unravels the story of her fractured family.

Daisy Johnson was born in 1990. Her short fiction has appeared in Boston Review and the Warwick Review, among others. She was the recipient of the 2014 A. M. Heath Prize, and currently lives in Oxford, England. Fen is her first novel.
