Kevin Young, director of the Schomburg Center and author of twelve books of poetry and prose, presents his latest work of nonfiction at Greenlight. In Bunk, Young traces our country’s long history of “hoaxing” – from P.T. Barnum to Donald Trump – and uncovers the considerable racial anxieties and delusions often underlying the practice. He explores seances and freak shows; fake autobiographies and phony journalism; The Hitler Diaries and War of the Worlds; Rachel Dolezal, JT Leroy, Sybil, Lance Armstrong and many, many more. In this brilliant and timely work, Young asks what it means to live in a post-factual world of “truthiness” where everything is up for interpretation and everyone is subject to a pervasive cynicism that damages our ideas of reality, fact, and art. Young discusses his latest book – longlisted for the National Book Award – with Lisa Lucas, Executive Director of the National Book Foundation.
