A Far, Far Better Thing to Do: A Lit Lover’s Activity Book
A Far, Far Better Thing To Do is labeled as a Lit lover’s activity book, and it truly is just that. There are word searches, crosswords, mazes, quizzes, and even connect-the-dots. There are also coloring pages and continue-the-story activities. Every single page of this book is dedicated to the classics. If you haven’t read all the classics, then you might have a hard time with some of the puzzles. However, it is still very much worth your time because you can learn about great literature and its authors in a fun way. I thought I was a real Lit lover, but I discovered I didn’t know very much. I still had lots of fun coloring, solving puzzles, and learning facts I never knew before.
For me personally, I learn better through activity than just reading a bunch of facts. So although this activity book was probably not meant as a learning tool, it actually became one for me. The continue-the-story sections really let you flex your creative muscles and see how that piece of literature would have turned out if you had gotten a say in it. I really only have two complaints about this book. I did not like the marry, kill, do section, and the mazes were a bit hard to do considering they spread over two pages and you couldn’t see very well in the crack of the book. The coloring pages were fantastic and really brought particular scenes to life.
I recommend this book to not just Lit lovers, but even those who just enjoy activity books or who want to learn about the classics without necessarily having to read them all. I would still suggest you read the books Ms. Herr mentions, though. This is a fun book to get for yourself or for someone who loves books but has them all already.
