Magination Press is the publishing arm of the American Psychological Association. This volume deals with sadness and so presents coping skills which are actually useful at any age. Included in the book, is a note to parents and caregivers about the strategies and tools within the storybook. The lovely messages in the book are “sadness is normal, talking about it helps, it’s ok to cry”, etc. They choose a boy to illustrate that it is ok to cry which should empower the young to let their emotions out. You will find yourself breathing along in the coping exercise “let your breath move like the swaying trees.” As the book normalizes sadness, a young person is sure to feel relieved that his emotions are not unusual or permanent. The sister authors are a counselor and journalist respectively.

The illustrations move through a variety of scenarios in a vibrant realistic and fun way. Whether the child has suffered profound grief or just a boo-boo, they will find that this is a helpful book to make them feel better.
