Angel of Storms

We rated this book:

Chosen by the Angel of Storms, betrayed by one of his associates, and rescued by the Travellers, Rielle finds herself being drawn into the inviting life of the magical nomads—even if they believe that her Angel is really the Raen, a powerful sorcerer whose laws regarding the use of magic are obeyed by all worlds.

Liftre teacher Tyne finds himself on the verge of becoming an outlaw now that the Raen has returned, bringing with him the laws against teaching magic. In order to keep a promise he once made, Tyne finds himself agreeing to work for the Raen as a spy among the Rebel movement that’s intent on destroying the Raen once and for all.

I enjoyed Canavan’s writing because it flows so smoothly. Yet I still found this book too easy to put down due to the slow pacing of the story. This novel weighs in at over 550 pages, but it could have cut a quarter of that and had a much tighter story. To add to the non-urgent pace, the main characters don’t really display any strong emotions, even when presented with opportunities to do so. In short, good writing but a poor structure.
