Before She Knew Him: A Novel
Henrietta and Lloyd are a young couple looking for a fresh start in a new town. They attend a block party where they make the acquaintance of Matthew and Mira Dolamore. The couple hit it off and make plans for dinner. A nice night between the two couples ends on a hinky note when Henrietta notices a trophy in Matthew’s room. Henrietta is soon abloom with suspicious thoughts, as she believes the trophy belongs to a young man who was found dead. The young man lived near Henrietta, and her obsession with the case led them to move out of their previous neighborhood. Lloyd believes that Henrietta’s bipolar disorder is fueling the paranoia and she needs to let the matter drop. Matthew has taken note of Henrietta’s suspicions and starts covering his tracks because Matthew has a murderous secret or two. A cat and mouse game ensues between Henrietta and Matthew, as Henrietta seeks to trap Matthew, while Matthew seeks out prospective victims. Respect for Henrietta and a code keeps Matthew from harming his sleuthing neighbor, but will things change?
Before She Knew Him is a wicked thriller that does not disappoint. Peter Swanson has written another gem that pulls the reader in and never lets go, even as the story comes to a close. This is a book that will keep you up at night and haunt your thoughts. A fun, chilling read.
After editing at City Book Review for a few years, I took up the duties of editorial assistant, which include assigning books for review, posting reviews to our various sites, and nagging reviewers for things. In my non-nagging time, I’m a gamer, artist, writer, and notorious black thumb/bane of plants. My answer to every book-related question: read Octavia Butler.
