Being the children of river rats is never easy, but for 12-year-old Rill Foss and her three younger sisters and little brother, it is heaven. Their mother, Queenie, is having a baby, and their father, Briny, has to rush her to the hospital when things start to go wrong. While they are away, some men come and take the children away, delivering them to an orphanage. Life takes a terrible, dark turn for the children.

When Avery Stafford steps into a senior home, she has no idea how much one chance encounter can change her life. It is there she meets May Crandall, who seems so familiar to her somehow. May talks to her briefly and steals a bracelet from Avery. She becomes fascinated with May and follows a trail that leads her to a hidden history of her own.

Author Lisa Wingate has written an breathtakingly beautiful, sometimes heartbreaking story that will grab readers and not let them go until the last word. The writing is spectacular. If you love historical fiction, read this book. If you love mysteries, read this book. If you love a little romance, read this book. This is not to be missed!
