I can’t say that I chose this book without bias. R.G. Belsky and his main character, Channel 10 reporter Clare Carlson, had me hooked from the first book I read in the series. Clare is smart, reassured, and quick-witted. In Beyond the Headlines, she is hired to interview actress Laurie Bateman about her divorce from multimillionaire husband Charles Hollister. As Clare shows up to their Fifth Avenue apartment, she sees first responders surround the area. Charles Hollister has been murdered. Hit with a lamp and shot with three bullets. Laurie is the main suspect and is taken into custody.

Clare does what she does best. She sticks her nose in where it doesn’t belong to find the truth behind what really happened. This story is right in line with all the other Clare Carlson mysteries. Her man-crazy behavior is still there, albeit toned down a bit in this one. And as in the other books, her main sources are all ex-husbands or ex-boyfriends. Clare keeps searching and goes where the case takes her, researching Hollister’s activities during the Vietnam War and how he made his millions as well as the story of Laurie’s mother’s immigration from Vietnam.

This book has an excellent plot featuring fantastic characters that will hold your attention all the way through.
