Big of You
This is a collection of stories that didn’t make much sense to this reader. Each story feels disconnected and random. Whether or not a reader is interested in a character as she makes coffee, pours it down the sink, and washes her ice cube trays, it isn’t my cup of tea. Her first story about two girls traveling together in Europe did capture my attention, but again, the story didn’t seem to go anywhere until the ending, which was a surprising “auto stop”. In some circles, this may be taken for originality, but I prefer actual stories in the stories.
This is the writer’s third book. She teaches writing at a prestigious university. I wish I could generate enthusiasm for her style of writing, but I am unequipped to do so. The reader who likes to skim and drift may find this collection compelling, but I must defer to meatier fare.
