Children of the World
Children around the world are similar, but different. This book seamlessly weaves the similarities and differences within its high-gloss color pages depicting everyday children throughout the world. Apart from providing some basic knowledge of children in other parts of the world, the book encourages reflection and understanding of others who are both different from and similar to us in other parts of the world.
The book is divided into two primary parts (“Children at Home” and “Children in their World”), and it has approximately twenty chapters. Each is a double page spread that focuses on one aspect of children’s lives (such as popular modes of transportation, common cold remedies, local greetings, beds, games). There are also half a dozen pages on common words (such as please and thank you, good bye, feelings).
Similarities and differences are portrayed through chapters on bread and showcasing the different types of bread consumed throughout the world. Another is the different toppings on pizza. The spread on national dishes highlights the diversity of foods, but also shows that we all have national dishes (and national pride). The earth tone colors and bold illustrations interspersed with the text make it a great teaching or learning tool for both younger and older children.
