Cockfosters: Stories

In one story we meet two old friends who are having a discussion while they ride the train. In another, a husband and wife are in a role-reversal situation where the husband is lying awake worrying about trying to balance the family and work. A woman discussing Moscow with her Russian fridge repairman is the plot of yet another. None of these scenarios sound particularly interesting, but in the hands of Helen Simpson they become more engrossing that you could imagine.

Simpson provides us with deep characterization in such a short time that the reader truly cares for these people and becomes involved in their situations. Each story’s title is the name of a city and provides a wonderful sense of space and a feeling of being there as part of the conversation. Simpson is an inventive and skilled writer who turns the dramas and worries of everyday life into literature of the highest caliber. Simpson is truly a master short story teller and deserves more recognition in her home in England and stateside as well.
