Dark Age Monarch: The Reign of King Arthur is a novel of Arthur that combines fiction in the style of history text and theories on what the real King Arthur was like. Passing from before Arthur’s time and the youth of Merlin, to the death of Arthur, Dark Age Monarch spans a large period of time. Keeping this in mind, Dark Age Monarch is a fairly good book, although it is written in a dryer and more unemotional tone than most novels. Its approach to the tale of King Arthur is as realistic as possible, and the historical information on what a real Arthur would be like is amazing. I recommend that every library system own one copy, and most Arthurian legend enthusiasts would enjoy a copy of their own. Dark Age Monarch is well written, but not captivating and emotional. This makes the book good for reading chapter-by-chapter, and the chapters are short enough that this works well. I do not recommend this book for children and teens, solely adults. Adult enthusiasts of historical fiction, narrative history, and Arthurian tales would greatly enjoy this interesting book.
