Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor Volume 1 (Doctor Who The 13th Doctor)
The Thirteenth Doctor and her trio of companions uncover several mysteries when they rescue a time traveler from a recurring energy vortex, only to be captured themselves by a group of militarized aliens. What is the time traveler hiding? How will they escape the alien prison? And what does it all have to do with the hoard being amassed by Scrooge McDuck’s boney extraterrestrial counterpart?
A New Beginning is a fantastic introduction for the Thirteenth Doctor since both fans of the show and comic book newcomers can immediately settle into the action, adventure, and mystery of the story, no homework required. The plotline avoids the needless timey-wimeyness of some of the other Doctor Who comic book stories, offering just enough twists and turns to be engaging without feeling convoluted.
The Doctor absolutely shines, the dialogue capturing both her and her companions with ease. And the visuals take full advantage of the medium, creating alien worlds and settings that would severely tax the budget of any one episode of the show. The comics feel grander, creating an additional dimension of scope and scale to the Doctor’s already impressive manipulation of the traditional dimensions.
With writing like this, the Thirteenth Doctor’s new run of comics is sure to be a winner.
