Doña Esmeralda is a tiny woman, no bigger than a toddler, with a huge bouffant hairdo. She is hungry all the time and loves to eat, but all she can find to eat is all the stinky, mushy, yucky things that naughty children don’t want to eat. But then, one day, Doña Esmeralda discovers that there are a lot of other things that the children do like to eat — delicious things. And that is when everything changes. Doña Esmeralda eats and eats and eats everything that she can find. And not just food. No. She slurps up all the food and the animals at the zoo and the children and the parents and all the diet soda. But she can’t hold it all and it all comes back out.

Melissa de la Cruz has written a story based on a Filipino folktale from her childhood. It is a perfectly silly story that youngsters will love listening to. The illustrations by Primo Gallanosa are bright and colorful and filled with lots of funny details that will keep little eyes on the pages. The author’s note in the back explains the origin of the story, and a recipe for Lumpia is included.
