East Coast: Arctic to Tropic
Here is a very beautiful, huge volume ideal for a coffee table. Yet East Coast is quite a disappointment. This is a photographic collection following author David Freese’s previous photographic volume showcasing the West Coast. Freese’s main purpose was to show the effect of climate warming over the entire coastline from the Arctic to Florida’s tropics, a visual record of our whereabouts between 2013 and 2015. The book opens with a long introduction followed by a ten-page essay by a journalist and a shorter essay by an ecocritic. Then comes the main body of the photos, all black and white, toned to a light brownish tinge. The photos vary greatly in size: from half-page to three-quarter-page to double-spread and some skinny but long panorama views. They were done digitally in color but were converted into toned black and white. Too bad the author preferred quantity over quality. Nearly two-hundred photos are crowded into this volume and, paging through similar ones one after another, they frankly become boring. They are good photos, but only a rare few may be called artistically exceptional. Each is labelled with a short caption naming location only. Many photos were taken from the air, others from the ground.
