Escape from a Video Game: The Secret of Phantom Island (Volume 1)
Video games are getting more immersive by the day. But what if, somewhere out there, tucked away, was the ultimate choose-your-own-adventure video game experience. Cooper Hawke and the Secret of Phantom Island just might be that game. But be careful… once you’re sucked in, you might never find your way out again.
Escape from a Video Game: The Secret of Phantom Island embraces the classic multipath format of CYOA books and loads it up with all sorts of obstacles to overcome and puzzles to unravel. As you explore the strange island, its deadly enemies, its bizarre plant and animal life, and the mystery at the heart of the story, you’ll have to be clever, patient, and a little bit lucky to avoid all of the potential ugly deaths waiting for you.
I’m a puzzle guy and a sucker for CYOA-style storytelling, and Escape from a Video Game feels genuinely next-level. The puzzles are topnotch and interesting (with only a few repetitive spots), and the story unfolds at a breakneck pace. The book is meant for ages 8 and up, but I think readers of all ages will enjoy this interactive reading experience.
