Are you thinking of, considering, or starting to plan a life living in a foreign country? In Financial Planning for Global Living, Jennifer Patterson will walk you through the necessary steps to mastering the logistics of living a cross-border, straddled, or single-country lifestyle when it comes to your finances. Having years of experience helping others, and currently living the cross-border life herself for many years, Patterson knew there was a market for helping people who resided and had assets in multiple countries. While she already had a background in financial counseling, she discovered she wanted more. So, Patterson started her own business and published her first book, the first in the category of cross-border financial planning. In Financial Planning, she uses resources, graphs, diagrams, and real-life examples to help the reader grasp a better understanding of various taxes, treaties, and insurances used in different countries. This is not a book that will explain how to manage your finances through a budget, but moreso one that will help you manage and understand life skills regarding your finances and how to realistically plan for the future, twelve months at a time, year after year. Going into detail about each area of planning and strategy in regard to the “Cross-Border Life + Wealth Achievement Plan,” Patterson appears to know her stuff and writes in a way that the layman can understand.

I was very impressed with this book! While I have no immediate plans to move overseas, who knows what the future holds as far as traveling for myself and my family? And while I have no plans of getting a divorce, let alone one overseas, I found the information about each country’s policies in that area very interesting. As I previously stated, Patterson’s writing is very relevant and easy to understand, which is very helpful, considering the topics she is discussing, like 401k’s and Roth IRA’s and many, if not all, of the tax exemptions and insurances of which to be aware. This book helps to lead you in the right direction if you are planning an extended stay away from your home country, then it is up to you to also find the right counsel to aid you in a successful and prosperous time with your financial and emotional health. This is a book that I would recommend to anyone, whether traveling or not, if only for the wealth of knowledge—pun intended—you will acquire from the text and Patterson’s experiences.
