Hell’s Gate takes place in the dense forests of South America in 1944. Allied forces have discovered a huge Japanese and Nazi submarine deep inland, so Captain R.J. MacCready is sent in to find out what they could possibly be doing. Along the way, he runs into his old friend Bob Thorne, who was supposed to be dead and Bob’s wife, Yanni. MacCready is a soldier, but also a zoologist, which comes in handy when he soon discovers that something is hunting him and the enemy deep in the jungle. MacCready has to stop the evil Axis plot and keep from being dinner at the same time.

What a great read! It very much reminded me of a mix between Congo by Michael Crichton and The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Yet it had its own charm and individuality. There was so much historical accuracy and the fact that one of the authors is a zoologist lent a lot of credibility to the story. Full of action and intrigue, and my personal favorite, unknown sources of danger, made this book a very exciting read.
