Dani is getting out of school for her first summer break, and her father is hit by a car. He ends up having to stay in the hospital for a long time, but Dani is invited to stay with her best friend, Ella, on an island in the sea. They play and swim so much everyday that Dani hardly has time to miss her Dad; although when he misses calling her one day, she becomes very worried. The next day, plenty of visitors show up. Dani’s grandmother and cousin Sven have come to visit, but that’s not all. Later, Dani’s father and his new girlfriend arrive as well. This is not a good surprise for Dani.

Author Rose Lagercrantz has written an interesting early chapter book which examines problems faced by many children–a missing parent, a new love interest for a single parent, injury or illness for a parent, a disapproving grandparent, and more. However, both Dani and her grandmother come off as pretty rude and disrespectful, not a good message in an early chapter book. Illustrator Eva Eriksson’s wonderful drawings are the real icing on this cake and not to be missed.
