Matchmaking for Beginners: A Novel

Matchmaking for Beginners seems like it would be a fluffy, predictable, chic-lit book. However, this book is a delightful surprise full of depth, unique characters, and an inspiring message. Although the cover conveys a cute romance, it isn’t necessarily a romance novel at all. Rather, this book is the story of Blix, an eccentric elderly woman who has long eschewed convention to follow her heart and seek happiness in life, no matter the situation. Against her will, she attends her annual family Christmas party and meets her grandnephew’s fiancée, Marnie, whom she feels an instant connection with. Marnie is a nice young woman who welcomes the friendly attention of the old woman, especially as she finds herself in over her head with her future in-laws.

Although the book passes the torch of the story from Blix to Marnie, Blix is the heartbeat of all the characters’ actions. In many ways, she is a larger-than-life character, but she’s so vibrant and loving that the reader can easily get sucked into her world. The most “chic lit” aspect of the book is that it’s warm, comforting, and inspiring. A delightful cast of characters really brings the story to life, and the story will appeal to readers looking for a sweet, optimistic, read.
