On the Surface
On The Surface, Dani Fox and Sawyer Stone III seem like the perfect couple. Their YouTube channel highlights their journey around the globe on their forty-two foot sailboat. Currently, they are anchored in the Bahamas. After a party with their fellow cruisers, Dani disappears and Sawyer has no memory of what happened that night. As Dani is a blonde American woman missing in the Bahamas, the case goes viral and what follows is an epic spectacle where the suspects are declared guilty in the eyes of public opinion.
The characters in this story are deplorable, but as that’s the point I can’t really fault them for it. This book made me wonder how many YouTubers are actually like this. I’m not sure what it says about our society when all we do is watch other people live their lives and most of it’s fabricated. Anyways, if you’re looking for a quick read to bring on your next vacation along the lines of Gone Girl, this is the book you want. If you’re looking for something to restore your faith in humanity, this isn’t it.
