Our Crooked Hearts: A Novel
A woman appears in the middle of the road on Ivy’s way home from a party kicking off the start of summer. She seems to know Ivy, but how can that be possible? Things only get weirder from there, with her mother acting strangely and dead rabbits being left on their lawn. Her mother, Dana, has always had a gift and when she and her best friend Fee meet Marion when they are teenagers, they start down the path of occultism. What all four women will eventually discover is that there are powers out there and within ourselves that shouldn’t be messed with because of Our Crooked Hearts.
This is a story about magic, coming of age in a hard world, and the difficult relationships between mothers and daughters. If you learn anything from this book it would be about having grace with each other and finding forgiveness, as well as maybe don’t mess with magic when you are an angsty teenager. This book is different than any of Melissa Albert’s other stories and yet it still resonates with her energy. If you enjoy her other books or books about the supernatural, this one’s for you.
