Dave Robicheaux is a haunted man being dogged by friends and enemies. His wife was killed in a car crash whose details aren’t adding up. He is approached by a fading mobster who wants assistance unloading a Confederate artifact. The mobster offers to harm the man who was involved in the crash that took Molly Robicheaux’s life. Dave is white knuckling sobriety as he tackles the crimes and criminals native to the bayou. Dave is at the center of chaos in trying to help various people in need of assistance, one of them being Clete. Clete walked the beat with Robicheaux but is now facing financial oblivion. Dave’s attempts to alleviate any problems only seem to enmesh him in more hot water. He is soon the prime suspect in a murder, and his boss is hollering for answers while a rogue cop is snooping around and Dave’s sobriety is hanging by the loosest of threads. Will Dave be able to obtain answers before his life unravels?

Robicheaux is the latest in James Lee Burke’s continuing narrative of the tough-as-nails detective. The action is widespread, the characters well written, and the dialogue crisp. The story is fast moving; the only complaint being when it had to end. An excellent new addition!
