Texas Haunted Forts

Everybody loves a good ghost story, and Texas is full of them. But if you’re looking for a haunting with a truly rough-and-tumble story to match, you need to investigate the numerous forts, bases, and camps that littered the Texas countryside from the 1800s onward.

Texas Haunted Forts chronicles the often-bloody history of many historical spots in Texas, detailing not only the military history of each fort but the urban legends, ghost stories, and spooky anecdotes that populate many of them. Whether the base is still standing or simply a bit of rubble on the landscape, there’s usually some interesting tale on which to hang one’s ghost-hunting hat.

Unfortunately, save for a few interesting exceptions, the origin stories for these hauntings basically break down into a litany of terrible things Mexicans did to Texans, Texans did to Native Americans, Native Americans did to Texans, white people did to black people, and men did to women.

In fact, some of the entries don’t even mention a haunting or ghostly element to the fort’s history, resulting in a bloody, tragic story just for the sake of more unpleasantness.

Texas Haunted Forts has some nuggets of ghoulish gold in its pages, but it could do with some judicious trimming.
