The Cuban Affair: A Novel
Daniel MacCormick is a former soldier seeking more in life. He is a charter boat captain in Key West, where he meets Carlos. Carlos offers Mac a job chartering his boat for a fishing competition in Cuba. Carlos hints at something more, but Daniel must meet the clients first. Daniel takes Carlos, along with Sara and Eduardo, on a night charter. Fishing is not on the agenda, but a wealthy proposition is in the offing. Relations with the US and Cuba have thawed; however, the ill feelings of the Anti-Castro Cubans still burn. Mac is asked to have his boat used as subterfuge for a mission to reclaim the lost treasures of the Cuban exiles. He and Sara will pose as tourists on a tour who eventually hook up and ditch the tour for the treasure hunt. Mac questions the danger and intelligence of the mission, but the reward will lead to a new life. Is it worth it? Will the feigned romance lead to something more? Will Mac be alive to enjoy either? We will see.
The Cuban Affair is the latest in the ever-widening set of fun thrillers from Nelson DeMille. The writing is captivating, the dialogue smart and funny. It’s a romp that will leave the reader with paper cuts from the quick page-turning.
