The Deception: A Novel

Maud Price was once known as the Maid of Light, a famous child medium. She and her spirit guides would bring peace to those who had lost loved ones. It’s been years since she’s heard the spirits, and now poor and with a failing reputation, Maud enlists the help of Clementine Watkins. Clem is well known amongst spiritualists for her ingenious tricks and contraptions, which allow others to think that the gift is real. At first, Maud is glad for her reputation to be restored, but the guilt begins to eat at her and she can no longer handle The Deception. However, Clem will not allow her fraud to be exposed or lose the fortune she’s made. Anyone in her way better watch out or they will also end up a spirit.

I thought the plot was interesting and enjoyed the look into the lives of those making a living during the height of the spiritualists. However, the writing and the characters I found a bit lacking in luster. If you enjoy the author’s other books, you might enjoy this one. I don’t know that I’d recommend it to those interested in spiritualists or those trying to expose them.
