The Forbidden Book
On the eve of her wedding, Sorel has finally decided she just can’t do it. She tried every argument with her father, but everything fell on deaf ears. So, with a little voice in her ear, she jumps out the window and escapes from an arranged marriage and her father’s greedy clutches. She takes on the name Isser Jacobs, accidentally using the name of a man who came to her father in business, only to find out he has a price on his head, illegally printed pamphlets, and a notable absence. While navigating the dark side of her town to get answers, she learns who her friends are and, more importantly, who she wants to be.
Sorel’s sexual identity is not the focus of this book. This tale is more about Sorel’s growth and discovery of herself than any romance she may have. The Jewish religion is the backbone of this story, and many Jewish words are used throughout, and meaning is discerned through context. Most chapters open with Sorel, but others as a flashback by Isser Jacobs, and it takes a second to recognize the individual voice. Overall a good gender-swapped adventure.
