Joanne Wong Blackerby’s The Frame and The Flow: Coaching at the Speed of Humanity is a thoughtful coaching book about what happens when humans collide with systems, pressure, and uneven expectations. Blackerby argues that coaching is more than technique; it needs judgment and being present in the moment. Being able to respond well when faced with challenges, from culture and identity to power and uncertainty.

Blackerby refuses to take the easy road; the simplest answer is often not correct. Rather than trying to create an easy-to-follow coaching checklist, she pushes her readers to reflect and consider ethical issues behind the scenes. Ridged formulas crack under pressure – something, something, oak tree versus the willow seems applicable. That flexibility (or flow, as the title might suggest) gives The Frame and the Flow a different feel to most business-adjacent coaching books.

The Frame and the Flow is at its strongest when it argues that growth and change conversations in coaching rarely move in straight lines. Blackerby’s attention to issues of power, culture, and identity also challenges the conventional wisdom that all coaching is the same. This is less a step-by-step guide to coaching and more conceptual. But the concepts deserve as much attention as the rules. This works as a guide for coaches trying to have more awareness in their role and take on the responsibility that coaching has in clients’ lives beyond the immediacy of the session.

This is less coaching as a professional skill and more human skills in working with people. The coaching comes from humanity, not the role.
