The Greek Gambit is another fast-paced action thriller by author Charles A. Salter. In this story, Colonel Blake Hunter, head of the U.S. military’s Nuclear Response Team, has finally found some time to go on vacation with his lovely wife, Mia, and six-year-old twins Kevin and Sarah. Their trip to Santorini, Greece, is a getaway that is much needed. When Mia’s purse is snatched, and Blake runs after the punk kid who has it, he realizes he has been baited into a trap far more sinister than a simple street robbing. A new form of radiation is out on the market, and it is up to Blake and his team to stop the terrorists from using it. Several people along the North Carolina coast have already become sick or have died from this new weapon, and the United States government only trusts its best man to get down to the bottom of the situation and find the source.

Blake’s team consists of Lacey (who leads the Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site, the civilian counterpart to Blake’s military team) and Marine Lieutenant Jim Logan. The story runs back and forth between the team in the field and their spending time at the home base where Blake’s family is being safeguarded. This is where the head of the security team, Robertson, has all of the weapons the team needs.

One of my favorite aspects of Salter’s writing is the detail he uses for his characters and settings. For example, Blake is known to love his green tea. And Mia was a beauty queen. There are also very specific commands and code words that Blake has taught Mia and his children in case they are in trouble. When Blake finds himself in a medical predicament, his stubborn nature takes over despite the doctor telling him that he could die at any moment. This tough get-the-job-done-no-matter-what persona gives the readers a good look into Blake’s personality. The story carries its readers from Santorini to the island of Corfu, and everything from the beautiful stone walls to the history behind the architecture and people is revealed.

This book is the perfect read for anyone who loves action and adventure. It is a well-balanced story that shows the different sides of this military man and his love for his family and his country. With bits of humor thrown in the dialogue, this could easily become the next Indiana Jones or Die Hard.
