Jack Broderick is walking through minefields of humanity in a trek to reunite with his family. It has only been a few short weeks since solar flares released electromagnetic pulses that fried the electrical grid and disconnected the country, if not the world. Jack narrowly escaped death on the day of the pulse, and he has been flirting with mortality in the ensuing days. He and his newfound friend Skinny are stuck off the Florida coast as a major hurricane bears down on the men. The pair ride out the onslaught of the storm but are quick to discover new dangers when they decide to explore a seemingly abandoned and marooned yacht named the Andiamo.

Scenarios similar to what transpired on the Andiamo have become all too familiar to Jack since the lights went out. Cooperation between people has been discarded, and survival of the fittest is the running theme. Despite his desire to continue his journey, Jack Broderick is a selfless man who will stay and defend the little people.

Humanity’s struggle through a broken-down world is viewed through the eyes of Jack Broderick in the fascinating apocalyptic adventure The Gulf. Jack Broderick is a protagonist whose life has been heavy with pathos over the previous years but doesn’t dwell in self-delusion. His inner thoughts convey the guilt he bears for the downward spiral that cost him his marriage. As Jack fought to get back on a direct path to his wife and kids, he had to fight for the defenseless and has taken many lives.

The book’s realism shines in Jack’s grappling with the ramifications and morality of his actions. The alcoholism that Jack is fighting is coupled with a blinding rage that consumes him when people he cares about are threatened. The Gulf hooks the reader’s interest from its tempestuous beginnings and doesn’t release its hold until the very end. Owen Garratt has written a thoroughly gripping novel.
