The Gutter Prayer
When three thieves–an orphan, a cursed man, and a ghoul–are betrayed by the master of the thieves guild, their quest for revenge uncovers dark truths about their city and exposes a dangerous conspiracy, the seeds of which were sown long before they were born. Cari is a drifter whose past and future are darker than she can know. Rat is a Ghoul whose people haunt the city’s underworld. Spar is a Stone Man, subject to a disease that is slowly petrifying his flesh. Though chance brought them together, they’re all that’s holding back total armageddon.
Right off the bat, I was ensnared in the world and the characters surrounding The Gutter Prayer. The characters stood out to me right away. They all had such unique voices and very unique (and clear) personalities that when compared to each other, it was easy to tell who was who. While side characters in books tended to be bland in nature, I found the exact opposite of side characters in The Gutter Prayer, making the world itself feel more real and polished. Though the narrative is fast-paced, I found that the plot materialized very slowly. But I felt as though the plot started to pick up toward the second half of The Gutter Prayer as if the plot itself was being tied in a nice bow.
