It’s been six months since the first healthy baby in Britain refused to take a breath. There have been many similar cases since then and scientists seem to be no closer to figuring out the cause. The Hush that has fallen over the maternity wards is horrifying the nation. In response, the government is taking away certain freedoms and even passing laws to prevent women from giving birth anywhere but a hospital as well as making all pregnant teenage girls wards of the state, taking them away from their families. Emma, a midwife, deals with these tragedies every day at work, but the situation hits close to home when her seventeen-year-old daughter, Lainey, becomes pregnant. Emma will have to do everything in her power to keep her daughter safe from the powers that be.

Wow. This book was both amazing and terrifying at the same time. Everything that was going on did not seem too far off or too far-fetched. It was very well-written and hard to put down. I loved the mostly all-female cast of characters, although there were a couple of wonderful men in there as well. I don’t usually enjoy government conspiracy stories, but I highly recommend this one.
