The Retreat: A Novel of Suspense
Child star Katie has been talked into going to The Retreat by her future sister-in-law, Ellie. Katie has been spiraling downward for a while now, and Ellie thinks this will be good for her and for their relationship. Unbeknownst to Ellie, Katie invites her two college friends, Ariel and Carmen. Ariel is coming out of a bad relationship that got out of control and Carmen is the sole caregiver for her family and desperately needs a break. There are a few other guests at the retreat, including the enigmatic leaders, Naomi and Dr. Dave. Everyone at this retreat has secrets and out of these four women, only one will leave this place alive. This retreat is really to die for and you have to try the tea.
The premise of this book is what piqued my interest. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long once I started to read that I realized I wasn’t going to enjoy it. Not one of the characters was relatable or even somewhat endearing. Only one of the characters was somewhat redeemed at the end and was working their way to becoming likable. The book was so raunchy and full of bad language, I found myself skipping over whole sections in order to edit it out. Don’t even get me started on how messed up that retreat really was. There was a lot of promise with this plot but fell short of expectations. Unfortunately, I can’t unread it.
