Inspired by the heartwarming reunion, captured on camera and viewed by millions worldwide, of a man and a donkey separated unwittingly by the needs of a nation during the COVID-19 pandemic, The Story of Baldomera invites readers to view this narrative through the donkey’s eyes. They learn how Ismael and Baldomera first kindle their friendship. They grow close, even reliant on one another, and Baldomera is devastated when Ismael’s visits suddenly cease. She worries something tragic has happened, or even worse, he’s forgotten her. When he finally returns, he tells her how deeply he’s missed her and explains the circumstances behind his disappearance.

This is a timely story that will warm the hearts of children everywhere. It touches on an array of human emotions: fear, sadness, and grief, anticipation, excitement, and love. The illustrations are precious and masterfully complement the simple, yet meaningful text. The words are written at approximately a second to early third-grade reading level, and though some youngsters older than eight will enjoy this, the target audience is youth ages four to eight. The author includes a user-friendly scan on the back for easy access to the video of Ismael’s homecoming. It’s a perfect follow-up to this sweet tale.
