Animal Rescue Center: The Unwanted Puppy is a beginning chapter book appropriate for first through third grade animal-loving kids. Ella and her brother, Caleb, live and work at their parents’ animal rescue center. Unfortunately, the neighbors aren’t as big of fans of the center as one would hope, and Ella’s family struggles to justify their existence in the neighborhood. Yet, when an adorable puppy is left abandoned in a box, Ella knows they are just the people to help her.

This book is good for children who are leaving easy readers behind. There are cute black and white illustrations, but they appear on every few pages, helping kids transition to longer chapter books.

The story is interesting, and the relationship between Ella and her brother is realistically portrayed. Boys and girls with an interest in animals should enjoy this book very much. A cute book in the Animal Rescue Center series.
