The Vanishing Station: A Novel
Ruby Santos has had a rough life. Her mother passed away and she and her father had to move into their garage. Now she needs to work to help pay the hospital bills instead of attending art school because her father blows his money on alcohol. Then she discovers that her father can jump trains magically, and she has the same ability. Unfortunately, that also puts her at risk of discovery by the wrong people. To save her father and her house, she signs a contract to finish his last four years with Madame Em, the mob boss who controls the trains and special deliveries that pass through San Francisco. As her magic grows she learns more from Montgomery, Em’s dark, brooding, and handsome son. She starts to realize she may have to let go to hang on.
An original, compelling idea, Ellickson crafts a world in which magic is found on trains and places far away but leaves some questions unanswered (sequel, please?). The romance is blissfully sweet, and the family dynamics are complicated. Thrilling, horrific, and magical, this is one of the best debuts of 2024.
