Thrill Kill is a mystery/police procedural written by Brian Thiem. The plot centers around Oakland homicide detective Matt Sinclair. When Sinclair gets a call about a body hanging from a tree, he immediately rushes to the scene. Upon closer look, Sinclair realizes that the body is a prostitute named Dawn whom Sinclair had arrested a few times previously. As Sinclair and his partner Cathy Braddock try to unravel the circumstances of Dawn’s death, they are suddenly met with opposition. It turns out that Dawn was not a regular street hooker, but an escort servicing high-profile clients. As a result, those clients will do whatever it takes to stall the investigation in order to protect their reputation and authority.

Like any police procedural, Thrill Kill is a bit slow but an entertaining read. Where the book really shines is character development. Matt Sinclair, the protagonist of the story, is extremely well developed. As the story unfolds, the reader gets a glimpse into his life and finds that he has many demons. He has PTSD as a result of fighting in Iraq, and he deals with it by drinking alcohol. He realizes that he’s living a dangerous lifestyle, so he does all that he can to kick the habit. Despite his flaws, Sinclair is extremely dedicated to his work and goes above and beyond to solve the case.

Overall, I found Thrill Kill to be an enjoyable read. If you like a good detective story/police procedural, then this book is definitely for you.
