Twelve Months is the long-awaited 18th book in Jim Butcher’s bestselling series, The Dresden Files. For those looking to jump into the series, this is not the place. Go all the way back to the beginning and start from book one. Whether you prefer the printed book or audio book, getting introduced to Harry Dresden, Wizard, at Storm Front and working your way to present, is worth it. This novel builds on events from earlier in the series.

For fans of the Dresden Files, Twelve Months starts where Battle Grounds, book 17, leaves off. And as the title suggests, this novel takes place over one year, unlike the previous books with a relatively short time span. This novel also seems darker as Harry is dealing with grief. Given all that Dresden has survived, Butcher’s portrayal of Harry’s grief feels real. So are the ways that Harry chooses to deal with it.

Even though they are not new characters, Butcher dedicates much of this novel to giving us readers a bigger glimpse at Maggie and a lot more insight into Lara Raith. One consistent throughout the series: no one stays the same. Butcher is a master at character development and the ever-expanding storyline. Twelve Months was well worth the wait.
