Lucifer Jones — excuse me, the Right Reverend Honorable Doctor Lucifer Jones — is a con man, an opportunist, and a rogue. A jack of virtually no trades, Lucifer finds himself exiled from several continents, hoping that a journey across the Pacific to Australia will improve his fortunes.

Voyages is the fifth collection of Lucifer Jones stories, and Mike Resnick clearly has a ball plumbing the depths of pop culture to populate Jones’s curious adventures. Famous detectives, giant apes, and even a monstrous whale are parodied with affection, all while a bumbling scalawag tries his damnedest to make a profit, by hook or (much more likely) by crook. It’s like a madcap version of Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen with a criminal Forrest Gump connecting them.

My one issue with the collection is the repetition of certain gags. (An understandable consequence of compiling stories that were originally published in various outlets.) Around the third or fourth time Jones is caught with an extra ace up his sleeve, you’re wishing he could foul up in a more unexpected way.

That being said, watching Jones deal, double-deal, double-cross, and get double-crossed is a great way to spend a few hours.
