Yoke of Stars (Birdverse Books)
Stone Orphan is a student at the School of Assassins. To graduate, they must complete their first kill. Ulin is a linguist drawn to the school by a song and a curiosity about Stone Orphan’s language. But Stone Orphan, wanting to graduate, needs to draw an assignment out of Ulin. To determine a target, Stone Orphan suggests an exchange. A story for a story. Through these stories, Stone Orphan hopes that Ulin will decide on a target, but as the tales progress, both Stone Orphan and Ulin find hope and healing.
Yoke of Stars is the third book in R.B. Lemberg’s Birdverse series. Even though this literary fantasy is part of a series, it works great as a stand-alone story. The storyline is not linear, but instead, Lemberg uses the alternating tales of each character to tell a much bigger and complete story. Through these individual stories, Lemberg explores how language influences cultures, as well as gender and sexual fluidity. Lemberg’s storytelling is beautiful and unique and a great read for fantasy fans who cannot find themselves in the mainstream books of the genre.
