Power Failure: A Jake Ross Political Thriller
The third entry into Ben Bova’s political science thriller, Power Failure continues after the events of the second book. Jake Ross is a science advisor to Senator Frank Tomlinson who has high ambitions for a manned mission to the moon as well as Mars. Ross outlines his plans and Tomlinson tries to secure funding for the mission. However, as is the case with the infamous Washington bureaucracy and inaction, their plan is facing some opposition. Ross and Tomlinson persuade career politicians that the missions will boost American economy and create many new jobs, however, Congress is reluctant to approve the funding. Ross and Tomlinson are forced to battle government red tape in order to secure the funding.
Although Ben Bova is a science fiction author, the Jake Ross series is much more a political thriller than science fiction. Granted, all the books in the series deal with government bureaucracy and how it screws over people who are dedicated to noble causes like scientific and medical research. Since most of the book takes place inside the Washington political machine, the plot is somewhat slow and monotonous. One redeeming quality of the book is that Ben Bova develops his characters quite well and continues developing them in the third installment of the series.
