A Great Move: Surviving and Thriving in Your Expat Assignment
A Great Move is the perfect guide for anyone who is thinking about moving to another country. Author Katia Vlachos does a fantastic job of breaking down each step of moving, including the emotional aspects. She also shares with the reader the mistakes that other expats have made. I found the real-life stories to be quite interesting. For example, she compares a couple who did not prepare well for the move, who ended up separating afterwards, to a couple who made sure that every detail was taken care of. Moving out of the country is much different than moving within your own country. Things to remember include medical care, necessary paperwork, and what type of schooling is best to help children adapt to their new environment.
Vlachos also emphasizes the meaning of “home.” Home can be a place or it can be a feeling or it can be the people in it. It’s important to create that feeling of “home” when moving to another country. There are individual chapters in the book that delve into whether the expat is single, with a partner, or with a family with children. In each scenario, the proper way to plan was different. Vlachos lists the pros and cons of each scenario. Moving to a different country can be quite overwhelming; however, with the tips in this book, I think it would put most people more at ease. Having a plan and knowing what to expect when you get off the plane is very important. Visiting your new home before moving is a great idea I learned from this book and something that people may not think of doing before moving.
The importance of paying attention to how your children are adapting was an excellent chapter in this book. Vlachos gives ideas on how to help your children cope with the changes. She advises that how you treat a small child will greatly differ than how you would treat a teen. Her suggestion of not moving while children are teens is a good one as well. They are getting used to changes in their own bodies and have an established social circle so uprooting them may do more harm than good.
I really enjoyed reading this book because it was extremely thorough in its content. At the end of each chapter, the reader is given a checklist of questions to answer. I found these questions to be very helpful. It also has a big checklist at the end of the book that I think anyone who is moving should use. The book has a very organized feel to it ,and Vlachos includes several resources in the back of the book. A Great Move is the Little Black Book when it comes to becoming an expat.
