Aleida van der Zee Martens has been separated from her young son Theo during a Nazi attack on a group of Dutch refugees. Now she is in London and can only hope that her son has somehow come to England as well. While trying to find him, she encounters Hugh Collingwood, a reporter with the BBC who is eager to help her however he can. In the midst of the Blitz, facing family tragedy and murder, can Aleida find her son? Will she also find love?

I was swept up into this book from the very first. Aleida marries strength and vulnerability perfectly, and Hugh is a delightful combination of vivacity and tenderness. Sundin could not have made the characters more loveable. The plot is also rich and vibrant, tightly constructed and wonderfully paced. It is a romance novel, and will appeal to those who enjoy romance, but it has more layers, enough to appeal to readers who might only occasionally like romance. It is a war story, a story of hope despite impossible odds, and most of all a story about many different sorts of love.
