Second Nature: The Legacy of Ric Flair and the Rise of Charlotte
Ric Flair is more than just the Nature Boy. The Nature Boy, with his garish wardrobe and cocky strut, is just a persona. Ric Flair is a two time WWE Hall of Famer and father of four children. His younger daughter, Ashley (aka Charlotte), is a champion wrestler as well. Their stories make up this new book. Ric Flair debuted in wrestling in 1972, working his way up the ladder to the top of the NWA (WCW), then later the WWE. Flair writes about his relationship with the many men and women of wrestling, being complimentary and laudatory of the majority. His struggles with marriage, his striving to be a good father, and his anxiety about retirement provide the action of the first part of the book. Charlotte’s half of the book delves into her upbringing, her close knit relationship with her late brother, Reid, her rocky, abusive marriage, and her training to become a world-class wrestler.
Second Nature is a dual autobiography that will leave the reader wanting more. The book is a fast read, but that doesn’t take away from the raw emotions laid bare by father and daughter. The stories told by both are emotional, honest, funny, and touching. The reader will come away with a greater appreciation for life in and outside the square circle. A+.
